Emergency endodontic treatment, or an emergency root canal, is needed when a patient experiences unbearable pain due to severely decayed or damaged teeth. An emergency treatment typically means that the pulp chamber of the tooth has been compromised and that infection has spread to the roots and nerves of the tooth.
Many symptoms of an infected root canal may not be apparent in the early stages of development. However, if left untreated, the infection in the tooth will continue to progress, and eventually it will lead to more intense pain and possible complications with the surrounding teeth and bone. Some signs that you may need an emergency root canal include:
- Severe pain while biting and chewing
- Pain indistinguishable from that of a normal toothache
- Pimples on the gums
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Lingering sensitivity to hot and cold, even after the sensation has been removed
- Swollen, sore or tender gums
- Deep decay or darkening of the gums
- Tooth discoloration
- Pus or fluid coming from the mouth
